The situation

## An estate assembled over time

The IT environments we are asked to assess have usually been built up over several years by different people working under different constraints. Servers, virtualisation, network equipment, licences, hosting contracts, line-of-business applications and the integrations between them — each added to resolve a specific problem at the time it arose, and none of it documented as a whole.

The result is an estate that functions but cannot be evaluated. It is rarely possible to state with confidence which systems depend on which, when contracts and support agreements renew, where the single points of failure sit, which licences are being paid for but not used, or what the environment costs to run across a full year.

Decisions are then taken against incomplete information. Hardware is renewed because the configuration is familiar rather than because it is required. Suppliers are selected on headline price without a comparable scope. Migrations are committed to without a baseline against which the outcome can be measured.

What is missing is not technical capability. It is a current, documented picture of the environment, and an assessment written by someone with no commercial interest in the direction it points.

We do not resell the software, hardware or hosting we recommend. That separation is what makes the recommendation worth commissioning.

## What you receive

### Current-state assessment

What runs where, what it costs, what depends on what, who holds access, and where the operational risk actually sits. Written as a document, not delivered as a conversation.

### A recommendation

On the specific decision in front of you, with the reasoning set out in full so you can disagree with the parts you disagree with.

### A sequenced roadmap

What to do in what order, so that later work does not undo earlier work, and so that spending can be staged rather than committed at once.

### Supplier evaluation

Where you are choosing between vendors: comparison against your stated requirements, and the questions worth putting to each of them before signing.

Process

## How the engagement runs

### Access

System inventory, contracts, licences, and a conversation with whoever keeps things running day to day. Usually two calls.

### Analysis

We work through what we were given and establish what is actually the case, which is regularly different from what is assumed internally.

### Written assessment

You receive the document, we walk through it together, you challenge what you disagree with, and we revise before it is final.

### Decision

You act on it internally, ask us to implement, or hand it to another supplier. It is written to be usable in all three cases.

Fit

## Who this is for

### A good fit

Organisations of roughly 10 to 200 people where IT has grown by accretion and nobody has stepped back to look at the whole. Also useful ahead of a funding application, where the technical section of the file has to hold together under review.

### Not a fit

Day-to-day helpdesk and user support. That is a different service with a different operating model, and we do not provide it. If that is what you need, we will say so rather than take the engagement.
