The situation

## A site that launched and then stopped being useful

There are two versions of this, and we are called in for both. In the first, the site was built on a page builder by someone who has since moved on. Nothing can be changed without something else breaking, the plugin stack has not been updated in two years, and nobody knows which account the hosting sits in.

In the second, the site works perfectly well as a shop window. Orders arrive. And then a person opens the admin panel, reads each order, and types it into the stock system, then into the invoicing software, then into the courier's portal.

The second case is the more expensive one, and it is the one most rarely described as a website problem. The build was treated as finished at launch, so the work that actually determines whether the site saves time or creates it was never in scope.

A site is a front end onto the systems that run the business. Built without that connection, it adds a data-entry job to somebody's week.

We build the site and the connection to what runs behind it in the same project, scoped together.

### A site on a stack that fits the job

Chosen for what the site has to do and who will edit it — not for what we happen to prefer building. We explain the choice and what it costs you later.

### Connection to your systems

Stock, invoicing, CRM, courier — scoped in the same project rather than quoted as a second phase that never happens.

### Content structure and metadata

Page structure, titles, descriptions and markup set up as part of the build, so the site can be found rather than retrofitted for it afterwards.

### Forms with consent handled

Enquiry data arriving where you can act on it, with consent recorded and retention defined, as GDPR requires.

### Ownership

Source code, domain and hosting accounts in your name. Nothing held in our accounts, nothing you have to ask us to release.

### Handover and documentation

Written documentation plus a working session with whoever maintains it. The test is that the next change does not require us.

## Online stores and commerce

For a store, the site itself is the smaller half of the work. What determines whether it runs is the path a single order takes after the customer clicks: payment captured, stock decremented, invoice issued, shipment booked, entry posted to the accounts. We build that path and prove it with real orders before launch.

  **Payment.** Processor integrated, with the failed and partial cases handled rather than left to the customer to retry.

  **Stock.** One source of truth for availability, so the quantity shown on the site is the quantity you have, including across more than one sales channel.

  **Invoicing.** Documents issued automatically in the series and format your accounting requires.
- 04
  
  **Shipping.** Labels and tracking created from the order, with status returned to the customer without anybody retyping it.

  **Accounting.** Orders, refunds and fees posted so reconciliation at month end is a check rather than a reconstruction.
- 06
  
  **Returns.** The reverse path handled too — stock back in, credit note issued — because this is where manual workarounds usually reappear.

Selling on marketplaces as well as your own store is a separate piece of work on top of this: stock and pricing have to stay consistent across every channel, and each channel has its own rules for orders and settlement. We scope it per channel rather than claiming it is the same job everywhere.

## How the engagement runs

### Structure and content

Sitemap and content first, design second. Knowing what each page has to say is what determines the layout; the reverse produces pages that look right and say nothing.

### Design and build

You see it running on a staging address throughout, not as static mockups. Changes are agreed against something you can click.

### Integration and testing

The connections to stock, invoicing and shipping are built and then tested with real transactions, including the failure cases.

### Launch and handover

Launch, a review period, then documentation, source code and accounts transferred to you.

### Not a fit

Ongoing campaign work, ad buying and content production once the site is live. We build and hand over; running the marketing afterwards is a different service and we do not provide it.
